Ads on Tombstones Cut Burial Costs in Half

Jefferson Iowa News is reporting that an increasing number of people are fighting back against spiraling funeral and burial costs. By selling advertising space on their loved ones' memorials, they are able to cut these costs nearly in half. Many nationally recognizable names are popping up on tombstones and mausoleums, and the trend has finally reached Jefferson. Unfortunate folks who once had trouble purchasing even a simple headstone now are finding that they are financially within reach. And those who were in the past only able to provide a modest marker are able to upgrade to a more significant memorial.

Restaurant chains, sports equipment companies, and even wine and spirits distributors are getting in the act. They envision the day when a stroll through the local cemetery will take people past ads for Jim Beam, DirecTV, Aetna, and Snickers bars. Most cemeteries ask that the ads remain tasteful and do not subtract from the otherwise harmonious atmosphere.

There are cemeteries in some parts of the country that have added operating fast food restaurants, souvenir shops, and even strip malls. Those sites lucky enough to have famous people interned within their grounds find that they can be considered tourist attractions. Perhaps it is only a matter of time until an admission fee will be charged.

Tombstones and other monuments can be purchased online with the name of the sponsor of your choice already engraved (see photo at right). It is a simple procedure to add a loved one's name and information. A stone that previously may have cost several thousand dollars is suddenly affordable.

Most online tombstones can be engraved and shipped in three or four days. Upon receipt of your tombstone, some assembly may be required, but instructions are included in both English and Spanish, along with a screwdriver. Online memorial sales have increased over 700% in the last five years alone, and the addition of sponsorships will undoubtedly only extend that trend.

Whether your loved one is a golfer, bowler, or television addict, there is a stone out there waiting, and people are encouraged to select theirs now, while their opinion can still be heard!
